General Information

Boron nitride is created artificially by reacting boric acid or boron oxide with nitrogen. It is present in different crystalline arrangements, two of the most common types being –

  • hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), similar to the structure of graphite
  • cubic boron nitride (c-BN), similar to the structure of diamond

Boron nitrides are made up of chemical substances that are equal parts nitrogen and boron. It is an advanced ceramic material. Owing to its crystalline forms mentioned above, it is called white graphene or inorganic graphite. Boron Nitride is a relatively soft material and can be modified into different shapes like rods, plates, and crucibles and forms such as powder, aerosol, etc.

Boron Nitride Crucibles are used for a variety of applications like casting metals, or as insulators because of their physical and chemical properties, some of them being thermal shock resistance, non-toxicity, thermal conductivity, able to withstand high temperatures.

Boron Nitride Crucibles are relatively softer than other refractory materials, therefore they need to be handled delicately, with care to avoid causing any damage to the product and is necessary to maintain its quality.

Key Features

Boron Nitride crucibles can be used at high temperatures in an inert atmosphere, it also possesses significant properties such as high resistance to corrosion and electricity. Other properties include: –

  • High melting point (2973 °C)
  • Low wettability to molten metal
  • High thermal conductivity
  • Low thermal expansion
  • Relatively high thermal shock resistance
  • Extremely high working temperature with proper inert gas protection (>3000 °C has been recorded).
  • High purity
  • Chemical inertness

Applications

Boron Nitride Crucible’s high resistance to high temperature make it a versatile vessel for numerous applications, such as: –

  • High-temperature furnace insulators
  • Vacuum system electric insulators
  • Glass melting crucible
  • Crucibles for crystal growth
  • Crucible break rings for casting machine
  • Parts for ion injection equipment
  • Being used in the automotive industry
