General Information

Molybdenum is one of the most in-demand of all the refractory metals and is comparatively easy to shape into required forms like wires. Molybdenum wires are made by a process called mechanical deformation. Molybdenum wires are used in a wide range of applications for their physical properties like robustness in very high temperatures, high melting point, low vapour pressure, low thermal expansion and tensile strength.

Molybdenum wires can be available in different varieties

  • White molybdenum wire
  • Black molybdenum wire
  • Sprayed molybdenum wire
  • Molybdenum wire for cutting wire

Molybdenum wires are boxed and delivered as self-contained coils or as spools, reels and bands. Molybdenum wires are prominently used in wire cutting appliances due to their toughness, especially in high voltage electric fields.

Key Features

Molybdenum is a refractory material that can withstand high temperatures, even higher than steel and nickel alloys. Due to its oxidation at low temperatures, it is best to use Molybdenum Crucibles in vacuum conditions. Significant features include –

  • High purity
  • High creep resistance
  • High dimensional stability
  • Low co-efficient of thermal expansion
  • Good thermal conductivity
  • Good electrical conductivity
  • Good stiffness, greater than that of steel
  • High melting point (2622 °C)
  • High boiling point (4639 °C)
  • High red-hardness
  • Good strength and ductility
  • High density

Applications

Molybdenum wires have been used in incandescent lamps for a long time. Because of their properties it is majorly used in high-pressure and high-temperature industrial applications, other applications they are used for: –

  • Electric light source parts
  • Electric vacuum components
  • Heating and refractory parts in high temperature furnaces
  • Wire cutting machine
  • Spray wire for auto parts spraying such as piston ring, synchronizer rings, shift elements etc
  • Spray wire used for repairs in machine parts such as bearing, bearing shells, shafts
  • Wire-electrode cutting
  • Producing mandrel wire in coil manufacturing and as filaments in lamps, in furnaces, and for semiconductor manufacturing machineries

Pure molybdenum wires are widely used in industries such as:

  • Furnace Manufacturing
  • Heater Manufacturing
  • Automotive
  • Aerospace
  • Metal Industry
  • Rare Earth Industry
  • Metallurgy
  • Electronics
  • Spray metal
  • Chemical Industry
  • Stainless steel and Steel Industry
  • Oil and Gas
  • Nanotechnologies
